Nations & Conflict
Wars and rumors of wars
Watch closely“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.”
Why: A US–Israel war with Iran began February 28, 2026 and, after a spring ceasefire and a June memorandum of understanding, resumed in July. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the opening strikes. Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz — roughly a fifth of global petroleum and LNG — triggered a US naval blockade and rerouted world shipping. By late August the war had passed its sixth month with talks stalled. Washington is preparing what the Treasury Secretary calls the toughest sanctions in history; Tehran warns of a devastating response and has set conditions for reopening the strait. Transits rose 27% in the week to August 21 but remain at a fifth of pre-war levels, with most liquid cargo routing through the UN-authorized Omani channel Iran opposes. Iran and Oman have since proposed a phased framework for a temporary shipping channel with mine clearance, though Tehran insists this does not mean the strait is open; Trump says the mines are cleared and that he is in no rush to negotiate. Treasury opened a new sanctions campaign on August 25 targeting aviation, shipping, technology, gold and digital assets. By August 27 the IRGC said Iran and Oman had agreed each country’s share of the strait and of its revenues, converting the temporary corridor into a revenue-sharing arrangement, and monitors recorded an eighth consecutive quiet twenty-four-hour period with no kinetic action attributed to Iran. A separate war has been under way in Lebanon since March 2, when Hezbollah began firing on Israel; Israeli ground forces invaded on March 16 and now occupy territory in the south. Houthi missiles have shut Yemen’s Mokha port. Ukraine grinds on, Taiwan pressure builds, and Sudan’s war continues largely unwatched.
Persia arrayed against Israel
Watch closely“Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet.”
Why: Of all the nations named in Ezekiel 38, Persia is the least disputed identification — modern Iran, which changed its name from Persia in 1935. Iran is now in open, declared war with Israel and the United States, with ballistic missile exchanges continuing into late July 2026. Iranian leadership has called on citizens to “stand firm against the enemy.” No interpretive stretch is required to say the biblical Persia is presently at war with the biblical Israel.
The Magog coalition: Russia with Iran
Watch closely“Set thy face against Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal… Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them… Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters.”
Why: The futurist reading identifies Magog with the powers north of the Black and Caspian Seas (Russia), Persia with Iran, and Togarmah with Anatolia (Turkey). Russia and Iran signed a 20-year Comprehensive Partnership in January 2025 and a foreign-ministry cooperation plan for 2026–2028; Iran’s foreign minister met Putin in St. Petersburg on April 27, 2026. During the current war Russia has supplied Iran with intelligence on US military positions, real-time data on American warships and aircraft, and satellite feeds. Russia and China jointly vetoed the April 7 UN resolution on the Strait of Hormuz. By July 2026 Russia had completed the first batch of up to twenty Su-35 fighters ordered by Iran — a move from intelligence support to advanced weapons transfer. Russia, China and Turkey have also pressed jointly for an end to the war, while Washington has signaled openness to lifting the F-35 ban on Turkey over Israeli objections. Cutting across the usual reading, a August 9 memorandum after eighteen months of talks converts Russia’s Tartus and Khmeimim bases into joint training centers and returns civilian facilities to Syrian control. Whether this constrains Moscow or formalizes its foothold is genuinely disputed among analysts — Damascus reclaimed sovereignty, but it also resisted US and Israeli pressure to expel Russia entirely. Turkey, meanwhile, has moved from diplomatic friction with Israel into open strategic rivalry centered on Syria.
Jerusalem a burdensome stone
Watch closely“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about… a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.”
Why: Jerusalem remains the fixed point around which regional diplomacy fails. Saudi normalization with Israel is stalled specifically on an “irreversible and time-bound path” to Palestinian statehood, even as Washington dangles a civil nuclear agreement to unlock it. Temple Mount access is a live flashpoint. A city of under a million people continues to absorb a disproportionate share of the world’s diplomatic energy.
The burden of Damascus
Watch closely“Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.”
Why: Post-Assad Syria has become the arena where Turkish and Israeli ambitions collide most directly, with both powers building competing positions and Ankara pressing Damascus toward a security mechanism with Israel. Years of civil war have already devastated large parts of the country, and Syria remains among the ten nations carrying two-thirds of the world’s acute hunger. Notably, Ankara and Jerusalem are also reported to be discussing a deconfliction line inside Syria — a mechanism that exists to prevent collisions rather than prepare for them. On August 9 Damascus and Moscow agreed to convert Russia’s Tartus and Khmeimim bases into joint training centers, returning civilian facilities to Syrian administration within three months. Overnight on August 17–18 Israel struck the Abu al-Duhur airbase near Aleppo; Israel’s own Prime Minister’s Office said Syria “was on the verge of breaching” a security understanding by permitting Turkish troops to deploy there, and a US special envoy suggested Israeli leaders were baiting Turkey into conflict for electoral gain. This is the first kinetic action aimed at preventing a NATO member’s deployment — a change in kind, not degree. Cutting the other way, a Syrian delegation led by the foreign minister met an Israeli delegation under American mediation in Jordan on August 24 to keep the Israel–Turkey rift from playing out on Syrian soil, though Defense Minister Katz said on August 25 that the IDF will not leave its buffer zone in southern Syria.
The kings of the east
Notable movement“…and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.”
Why: China raised its military budget again in 2026 and hardened its rhetoric on Taiwan, following the largest-ever exercise of its kind in December 2025 — the seventh major drill since 2022. Beijing’s policy community increasingly treats an attempt to assert control over Taiwan as a matter of when. China also vetoed the Hormuz resolution alongside Russia and continues receiving Iranian-approved oil shipments through the strait. On July 23 Beijing ran a two-day live-fire drill in the Taiwan Strait after President Lai said Taiwan was “not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China,” and Chinese coast guard patrols east of the island began on July 5. Taiwan’s Han Kuang 42 exercise, August 5–14, integrates civil-defense mobilisation for the first time — testing conversion of civilian factories to military production. Its scenario assumes the PLA conceals attack preparations under cover of a routine exercise. More telling than the drills, China’s coast guard has expanded patrols east of the island to assert claimed law-enforcement authority over Taiwan’s maritime approaches — an attempt to normalize jurisdiction rather than demonstrate force.
“Peace and safety” / covenant with many
Background“And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week…” / “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them.”
Why rated low: The futurist expectation is a broad, brokered agreement involving Israel that later collapses. Nothing resembling that exists. Saudi–Israeli normalization is stalled on Palestinian statehood; the June memorandum with Iran did not hold and fighting resumed in July. The present mood is the opposite of “peace and safety.”
Israel & the Temple
Preparations for a third temple
Notable movement“So that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
Why: Ritual vessels and gold menorahs have been prepared, priestly training programs operate, and Israeli officials increasingly discuss Jewish worship rights on the Mount openly. National Security Minister Ben-Gvir declared that Israel has “restored sovereignty” over the site, and proposals for a synagogue on the Mount are under active discussion. Commentators describe the old “status quo” language as effectively obsolete. Pushing the other way, Saudi Arabia publicly rejected Ben-Gvir’s claim and may require preservation of the Temple Mount status quo as a condition of any normalization agreement.
Israel regathered in the land
Background“I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will bring them into their own land.”
Why rated background: In the futurist framework this is a settled precondition rather than a moving indicator — a Jewish state has existed since 1948 with a population now larger than that of any point in antiquity. Isaiah 66:8 asks whether a nation can be brought forth in a single day; the British Mandate ended and independence was declared on May 14, 1948, with recognition following within hours. It is listed here because Ezekiel 38’s invasion presupposes it, but it does not change week to week and so carries no watch level.
The Mount of Olives and the sealed East Gate
Background“And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives… and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west.”
Why rated background: Unlike every other card here, this tracks a fixed physical fact rather than a trend. In 1964, Jordanian surveyors siting a hotel on the summit of the Mount of Olives found an east–west fault beneath it and moved the building downslope; it stands today as the Seven Arches Hotel. Zechariah describes the mount cleaving east to west, its halves drawing north and south. Directly below and in view, the eastern gate of the Temple Mount — the gate Ezekiel 44 describes as shut and reserved — is sealed with stone and fronted by a cemetery.
The Natural Order
Famines
Watch closely“A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.”
Why: This is the most defensible red on the board. The 2026 Global Report on Food Crises found 266 million people — 22.9% of the analyzed population — in acute food insecurity, with acute hunger having doubled over the past decade. About 1.4 million are in IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe), a ninefold rise since 2016. Famine was formally confirmed in parts of Gaza and Sudan, two declarations in a single year for the first time in the report’s history. Conflict, not climate, is now the leading driver, affecting 147 million.
The drying of the Euphrates
Notable movement“Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.”
Why: The measured decline is steep and well documented. GRACE satellite gravimetry recorded a loss of 144 cubic kilometers of freshwater from the Tigris–Euphrates basin between 2003 and 2013 — at the time the second-fastest rate of groundwater depletion on earth, behind only northern India. Iraq, the furthest downstream, now receives roughly 25–30% of the river’s historical flow. A 2026 basin study found precipitation down 9.6% and evaporation up 6.3% across four decades, attributing 39.3% of renewable water depletion to human intervention against 13.6% to reduced rainfall. Iraq’s Ministry of Water Resources has warned the river could run dry by 2040.
Pestilences
Background“And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.”
Why rated background: CDC’s global summary through June 10, 2026 counts 1,022 human H5N1 cases worldwide since 1997. Between August 2025 and June 2026, twelve human infections were reported outside the United States across three countries, with three deaths. No person-to-person spread was identified in any of them, and US public risk remains assessed as low. After more than two years of intensive surveillance driven by the dairy-cattle outbreak, the virus still has not achieved human-to-human transmission — and sustained non-transmission under that much scrutiny is a reassuring finding, not a neutral one.
Earthquakes in divers places
Background“And there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.”
Why rated low — and this one matters: The data does not show an increase. USGS catalogues for 2023, 2024, and 2025 record 128, 89, and 129 magnitude-6+ events respectively — normal variation around a flat long-term average. 2026 stands at roughly 2,972 M4+ and 32 M6+ events year to date, with a maximum of M7.5 (Tonga; a M7.4–7.5 struck near Sanriku, Japan on April 20). The apparent rise that many people feel is an artifact of two things: seismometer coverage has expanded enormously since the 1960s, so we detect far more quakes than we used to, and every event now reaches a global audience within minutes. Two major quakes struck within twelve days: a magnitude 7.4 in western Colombia on August 10, the strongest there this century, with 265 confirmed dead and 496 missing; and a magnitude 7.7 in Flores, Indonesia, with 87 dead and nearly 45,000 homes damaged. Neither moves this card, and the pairing is worth addressing directly, because two deadly quakes in under two weeks is exactly what convinces people the frequency is rising. The world averages roughly fifteen magnitude-7 events a year — about one every twenty-four days. Two in twelve days sits above that mean for the window and well inside normal variation. Random events cluster; clustering is what randomness looks like. A pattern that feels significant across two weeks vanishes against a century of data. A quake’s death toll also reflects building standards, depth, population density and terrain — not seismic frequency.
The Church & the Age
Persecution of believers
Watch closely“Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.”
Why: Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List counts a record 388 million Christians facing high levels of persecution — up 8 million year over year. Of these, 201 million are women or girls and 110 million are children under 15. Researchers documented 4,849 faith-related killings in the reporting period, 4,491 of them (93%) in sub-Saharan Africa. Countries rated “extreme” rose from 13 to 15; Sudan, Nigeria, and Mali each scored the maximum on violence.
The gospel preached to all nations
Notable movement“And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”
Why: This is the one sign to which Jesus explicitly attaches “and then shall the end come” — and it is the sign the church can actually advance. As of August 2025 only 544 living languages remained with no translation begun; a year earlier it was 985, in 2020 more than 2,000, and in 1999 more than 5,000. The July 2026 ProgressBible snapshot lists 1,676 languages with no Scripture and no work underway, of which 535 (about 37.5 million speakers) are assessed as needing translation. Wycliffe is engaged in 3,100 languages across 169 countries.
A falling away
Notable movement“…for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed.”
Why: Religious disaffiliation continues to rise across North America and Western Europe, with sustained declines in attendance and in the share identifying as Christian. At the same time the global church is growing fastest in Africa, Asia, and Latin America — the very regions where persecution is heaviest.
Control of buying and selling
Notable movement“And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”
Why: 146 countries and currency unions representing over 98% of global GDP are exploring central bank digital currencies, with 49 active pilots as of May 2026. China’s e-CNY processed more than 3.4 billion retail transactions worth roughly $2.3 trillion by December 2025, and on January 1, 2026 introduced interest-bearing wallets with deposit insurance — a first. Brazil’s Drex has been restructured into a two-phase rollout that abandons most tokenization in favor of a centralized model for its first stage; the ECB aims at a digital euro in 2029. Technical capacity for programmable, permissioned, individually-gated payments is being built in public.
False christs and false prophets
Background“For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.”
Why rated background: Christ predicts a continuous stream of claimants, not one identifiable figure — and that is exactly what history delivers. A current example is Abdullah Hashem Aba Al-Sadiq, an Egyptian-American who founded the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in 2015 and claims to be the Qa’im, the Riser, with membership estimated in the low thousands. He is one of many. Muhammad Ahmad declared himself Mahdi in Sudan in 1881 and captured Khartoum; Juhayman al-Otaybi’s movement seized the Grand Mosque in 1979 proclaiming one; Mirza Ghulam Ahmad made his claim in 1889. The pattern is the sign. Any individual instance of it is not.
Knowledge increased, running to and fro
Background“…shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.”
Why rated background: Global travel, data volume, and machine intelligence continue their long climb, and the observation is plainly true of the modern world. But it is true of every decade since roughly 1800, which makes it useless as an indicator of anything in particular.
